D-Day 65 years later

I want to thank the U.S., British, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, Free French, Norwegian, and Polish troops who came ashore on Utah, Omaha, Gold, Sword, and Juno Beaches. I also want to thank the brave paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne, 101st Airborne, British 6th Airborne Division, 3rd and 5th Parachute Brigades, and 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion.

I want to thank the members of the RAF, and USAAC who destroyed the Luftwaffe and any target which looked dangerous.

I want to thank my United States Navy, United States Coast Guard, Royal Navy, Royal Canadian Navy, Free French Navy, Dutch Navy, and Polish Navy for providing naval gunfire for the troops fighting their way ashore.

I am thinking of my neighbor Frank who served aboard the USS Augusta at D-Day and watched the action at Omaha Beach through his big eyes and dedicated his life to military telecommunications to help the guys ashore talk to the ships and aircraft supporting them. I also thinking of my father's old boss and friend Vince who was a U.S. Coast Guard beachmaster at Omaha Beach providing first aid to the troops ashore.

All gave some, and some gave all. Support the Troops!!

Tiananmen Square - 20 years later

Twenty years ago, 04JUN1989, I watched with horror on CBS News, the People's Liberation Army attacking peaceful students demanding democracy. From that day forward, I have thought of that government as the "Butchers of Beijing".

As always, on this anniversary, I think of the innocent victims who were killed in their prime by a facist Army who coldly killed unarmed, peaceful students by the hundreds and thousands. I also think of my friend Jenny, who was a classmate of mine in college and became a dear friend and confidant. I will always regret losing touch with her, and I hope she is doing well and his happy. U.S.A.A.C Veterans visit their old base in the UK

This is a touching story about some U.S. Army Air Corps Veterans who visited their old base in England. They took off from this base to support the D-Day landings in France.

Please remember to thank a member of the Greatest Generation. I miss two of my neighbors who have passed away, one was at D-Day aboard a cruiser and watched D-Day through the big eye binoculars. Another was a Marine divebomber pilot. Both are sorely missed. My cousin, Peanut, who passed away in '95, was an Army medic and earned the Bronze Star and Purple Heart in Southern France by rescuing a member of his squad who stepped on a mine. Peanut was hurt by shrapnel from a mine he stepped on.

Michael Steele wins RNC Chairmanship

I am quite happy that Michael Steele is now the chairman of the RNC. Maybe under his leadership and guidance the RNC can return to its conservative roots. I first learned of him in 2006 when he ran for Senate in Maryland and unfortunately lost.

Mr. Quentin C. Aanenson was a P-47 pilot in Europe during WWII passed away. He was the principal person behind the PBS documentary "A Fighter Pilot's Story". It was a fascinating story about this member of the Greatest Generation and the 391st Fighter Squadron / 366th Fighter Group.

I remember one scene at the end of the documentary about a conversation he had with a neighbor when he returned to college about saving a group of tanks. He started talking about attacking German positions, the neighbor finished the story. He was in one of those tanks.

This afternoon I stopped by Reeds Ferry Lumber in Merrimack to get license plate bolts, the plastic junk which was on my car decided to break on me. It was stuck in the hole. I asked Steve the best way to remove the bolt. He offered to drill it out for me. He and his manager selflessly did about 15 minutes of work for me. I tried to pay them for their time and they refused.

Today is Sunday, December 7th, it is also the 67th anniversary of the Day that Shall Live in Infamy.

The Imperial Japanese Navy aircraft carriers involved in the attack were the Akagi, Soryu, Hiryu, Kaga, Shokaku, and Zuikaku. Only one day shy of six months later, the first four were sunk at the Battle of Midway.

The first wave started their attack at 0748 Hawaii time.

Fleet Admiral Isoruku Yamamoto said "I can run wild for six months … after that, I have no expectation of success". I recently learned the quote I used last year, was a Hollywood fabrication and has no basis in reality. Today's quote was used in 1940 at a number of cabinet meetings in Japan. Anyway, Yamamoto was correct, almost to the day.

I remember listening to a speech he gave concerning foreign aid. He was talking about how there was only one country he felt deserved aid. After a few minutes I thought he was talking about Israel and at the end of the speech he said the country he was talking about was Israel.

grand jury refuses to indict man killing criminals exiting his neighbor's house

A grand jury in Texas refused to indict Mr. Joe Horn for shooting two illegal alien convicted criminals who had just broken into his neighbor's house. Texas, thankfully has a Castle Doctrine, which allows a homeowner to use deadly force to defend his home.

Justice Scalia wrote the majority opinion stating the DC Gun Ban violates the U.S. Constitution. The ruling also confirms that the 2nd Amendment applies to individuals and not just groups like the National Guard.

Justice Scalia wrote 50 pages of historical analysis before you get to the actual ruling. Unfortunately, the decision was 5 to 4. At work, I was predicting 6 to 3 and a friend thought 7 to 2. The NRA is ecstatic over the ruling and is preparing suits in Chicago and other cities with draconian gun laws.

66th anniversary of the Battle of Midway

On this date in 1942, the Imperial Japanese Fleet withdrew from the waters surrounding Midway Island after losing four of the six carriers which took part on the attack on Pearl Harbor in an attack on the American outpost on Midway Island.

Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto said after the attack on Pearl Harbor the following "In the first six to twelve months of a war with the United States and Great Britain I will run wild and win victory upon victory". He was correct in his estimate almost to the day.

French group in Normandy adopts American graves

This story moved me to tears, I may find it hard to dislike the French after reading it. Les Fleurs de la Memoire was founded eight years ago to care for American graves in Normandy.

These wonderful people place flowers on graves when the families of the deceased are unable to.

The French military also plays a part, they have a military band play our National Anthem, our fighters fly over the cemetery in a missing aviator formation, a French chaplain and Rabbi both say prayers at the cemetery.

U.S. Embassies have been guarded by the United States Marine Corps for many years. The defacto American Embassy in Taipei does not have Marines assigned to it. The military attaches are not allowed to wear uniforms. These measures are taken because President Nixon in his shortsightedness, switched recognition from the Republic of China, an American ally to the People's Republic of China, a country we were in a shooting war with in Korea from December 1950 to September 1953.

One country became a democracy and embraced human rights, one remained communist and imprisons people at will and executes Falun Gong practitioners without a fair trial.

It is time to have Marines protecting our embassy and to make it an embassy again. It is also time to change the "One China Policy" to a "One China, and One Taiwan" policy.

Cargo ship under Navy contract fired upon speedboat in Suez Canal

SS Global Patriot is a cargo ship under contract with Military Sealift Command (MSC) to transport military goods for the U.S. Navy and has a U.S. Navy security team aboard. The ship was in the Suez Canal and was approached by several small boats approached the Global Patriot, despite several warnings over the bridge to bridge radio, one of the boats maintained its course to the Global Patriot.

The Global Patriot's security team fired several warning shots, and when the boat did not alter course, they opened fire to stop the boat.

I am glad the ship and her security team did not take chances, the memories of the U.S.S. Cole are still fresh and in tight quarters, a looser ROE is better than a tight one.

The U.S. Supreme Court, for the first time since 1939 have heard a major case involving the interpretation of the 2nd Amendment. This is a very hot button issue for me, and I have been following it fairly closely.

What has not been decided was the issue of the DC gun ban. The ramification of any ruling on the various and as far as I'm concerned, illegal firearms legislation controlling what the people are allowed to own.

Like many NRA members, I feel that gun control is keeping the weapon steady so I can get good groupings. Robert Heinlein wrote the following "an armed society is a polite society", I believe in this. Citizens who do not have a criminal record or a history of serious mental illness should be able to apply for a CCW and if desired, carry a pistol in a holster openly. There is less crime in an area where there are a large number of firearm owners.

www.nra.org helped awareness for this case come forward. In the March issue of "America's First Freedom" there were a number of articles on this case. I encourage all like minded people to join or re-new the NRA.

British fusiler awarded Military Cross for heroism in Afganistan

Fusilier Damien Hields was in a 50 man convoy and was attacked by 150 Taliban. He used a grenade machine gun to take out seven Taliban positions. Eventually, he was wounded by the Taliban and was treated by a courageous medic. He was awarded the Military Cross by the British Army and the NATO Meritorious Service Medal.

WW2 U.S. Army Air Force pilot gives back to villagers who sheltered him

I read this wonderful article on Fred Hargesheimer, who flew a P-38 reconnaissance aircraft which was shot down over New Guinea.

He eventually found the village of Ea Ea, near Papau. He was sheltered by the brave villagers for eight months until an Australian coastwatcher could arrange a rendezvous with an American submarine.

Mr. Hargesheimer felt a debt to these villagers and he worked to get donations to build a school, clinic, and library. He returned numerous times, his most recent visit in 2006, was to see his old P-38 which had been found.

This is a long but wonderful article about a brave pilot and a brave village who risked being destroyed by the Imperial Japanese Army.

Boston Fire Commissioner Roderick J. Fraser Jr. refused to sign off on a report stating that the intoxication of Warren Payne and Paul Cahill played no part in their death. He wants the commission to start their investigation again.

I asked a firefighter friend of mine recently his thoughts on these two Boston firefighters having cocaine and alcohol in their system. He was appalled by using drugs or drinking before going on duty. He could not tell me how much this might impact the ability of a firefighter being able to find their way out. He told me you can get disoriented two feet from the entrance of a structure if the smoke is thick enough.

The impairment of the two firefighters doesn't change the sympathy I have for their brother and sister firefighters and their families.

DPP v. KMT and politics in Taiwan

A friend send me this editorial from the Boston Globe Democrat err Boston Globe Fishwrapper depending on how you feel about them.

Anyway, the article talks about some of the political issues going on in Taiwan. The Chiang Kai-shek hall has been changed and renamed. Various statues to the dictator have been removed, similar to how statues of Stalin were removed after his death.

The article mentions that Taiwan refused the "gift" of two pandas from the Butchers of Beijing and I have a hard time disagreeing with it. My gut tells me the Butchers would have wording referring to Taiwan was "Chinese Taipei", which makes me a bit upset when I read it.

I was not aware Taiwan was allowed to join the WTO in 2002 under the ChiCom manufactured name, which I disagree with for obvious reasons.

Last weekend I had dinner with some friends from Taiwan and we talked Taiwan politics and they seem to feel the DPP has been waving the flag of the 1947 massacre of Taiwanese by the invading KMT Army in Kaohsiung and Keelung to get people to vote against the KMT. I viewed this as similar to what the GOP did for years after the Civil War by waving the bloody red shirt to keep people from voting Dhimocrat.

There is a link to an article written by Bhutto's own cousin who mentions that the former PM was convicted in Switzerland for money laundering and pending cases in the UK and Spain. This conviction alone speaks volumes to her character in my eyes.

I first saw Dapper right after I graduated high school, when he was with the equally famous Jerry Williams, protesting the proposed jail in New Braintree, MA. I had heard about him growing up and how much the Moonbats hated him.
